Socioeconomic Status

Health is influenced by an individual’s education, occupation, gender, marital roles, and social class. Most of us attribute diseases to biological rather than social factors. However, when taking into account social determinants of healthy living, persons with higher socioeconomic status are less likely to smoke, drink alcohol in excess; and more likely to exercise, have healthy eating habits and lifestyle management skills.

Whereas, persons with lower socioeconomic status are more likely to smoke, drink alcohol in excess; and less likely to exercise, have healthy eating habits and lifestyle management skills.

Socioeconomic status is the social standing of an individual or group and often affects the outcome of access to resources.
